Etat des mariages
La ré-élection de G. W. Bush n’a pas éliminé toute mobilisation en faveur de l’ouverture du mariage aux couples du même sexe.
Un prêtre épiscopalien (c’est à dire anglican américain) a déclaré récemment un moratorium on weddings :
In a protest against the Episcopal Church’s refusal to allow same-sex marriages, the leaders of a church in the stately East Rock section of this city have announced that they will perform no marriage ceremonies at all.

Un district régional de l’Eglise presbytérienne des U.S.A., qui avait souhaité déposer un mémorandum judiciaire en faveur de l’extension du mariage civil a finalement décidé de ne pas le faire :
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A)’s presbytery of Baltimore rescinded its vote to support an amicus curiae brief favoring same-sex marriages in Maryland, on January 13, 2004. According to the Presbyterian Layman, Thursday’s vote was made in response to a complaint that charged the Presbytery of going against the policies of the larger denomination.

Sur le plan civil, plusieurs Etats sont pressentis pour devenir les nouveaux Massachusetts. Ce serait la Virginie selon le Boston Globe.
En Floride, hier, une décision de justice (disponible ici en PDF : Case No. 8:04-cv-1680-T-30TBM, Tampa division, middle district of Florida) permet pour le moment à la Floride de ne pas reconnaître des mariages conclus dans le Massachusetts. Pour le commentateur Andrew Sullivan, c’était une bonne décision :
It’s the right decision. Civil marriage law should be left to the states, where it belongs. And the attempt by some gay activists to push this further and demand immediate national recognition of marriage rights is as strained constitutionally as it is foolish politically. What we need to do now is win the political and legislative fight in Massachusetts so that equality in marriage there can be seen as a democratic choice as much as a judicial decision.
